Location – Tardeo, Mumbai

 

This project holds utmost importance to Team Vaastu Vidhaan being the first learning experience in the skill of Heritage Conservation. This conscious effort created a strong base for the further endeavors of the firm.

 

The temple is the family shrine of Nana Shankar Sheth who was one of the founding fathers of Mumbai City. The name Bhavani Shankar holds a strong associational value with his parents. Built in Deccan Maratha style of Architecture, it stands out from rest of temple in the city. It also holds intangible culture associated with it as celebrities like Lata Mangeshkar has stayed in the neighborhood of this heritage temple.

 

The temple would have been lost to the city as it remained absent from the heritage list of Mumbai and fortunately was saved from being bulldozed through efforts of Late Dr. Sadashiv Gorakhshikar (Ex-Director of the former Prince of Wales Museum, now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya).

 

The conservation process for the temple was undertaken in the year 1997-98. The documentation and in process drawings prepared for this project, celebrates the legacy of hand drafting in architecture.
